This traditional Dogon male figure would have been used in a personal shrine in a family’s house in recognition of an ancestor and in his honor. The family would entreat the spirit of this ancestor to accomplish goals for the well being of the family, i.e., get well form an illness, protection from any threat they may perceive, etc.
